Scenic Beauty Spot: Sengan-en, Shoko Shuseikan

Scenic Beauty Spot: Sengan-en, Shoko Shuseikan

A Daimyo (feudal lord) garden of the Shimadzu clan, lords of the Satsuma Domain, constructed in 1658. This shakkei (borrowed scenery)-style garden, using Sakurajima as the model for the artificial hill and Kinko Bay (the contemporary Kagoshima Bay) as the object portraying pond, is worthy of note in regard to history, culture and nature. The remains of the reverberatory furnace inside the garden and the Shoko Shuseikan, a historical building adjoining the garden, are clear indicators of this area's role in leading Japan's modernization. The Sengan-en and the Shoko Shuseikan have become World Heritage Sites in 2015.
