Gifu
During the Sengoku period (1467-1603), Lord Oda Nobunaga, who used Gifu Castle as his base to unify the nation, abolished previous regulations to revive the war-torn town of Gifu. He introduced the policy of "Rakuichi Rakuza," allowing anyone to freely engage in commerce, and created a thriving castle town where people, goods, and information gathered. Furthermore, he welcomed the Portuguese missionary Luis Frois, initiating new exchanges with foreign countries. Nobunaga's innovative approach to cultural exchange during the Sengoku period, unhindered by existing conventions, represents the vision of the "New MICE" that Gifu City aspires to pursue in the future.

- Exquisite Onboard Ozashiki Asobi with a Maiko
Enjoy boat entertainment on the Nagara River, where Lord Oda Nobunaga once hosted his guests. It is an exquisite onboard ozashiki asobi that Gifu proudly offers, blending the tradition of cormorant fishing with the culture of banquet entertainment. Gifu is the only place in western Japan where male geisha, known as taikomochi, are active in the local hanamachi (geisha district). Kikuji, a master of the art of entertainment, will kindly guide guests through the ozashiki asobi together with a maiko. Board a yakatabune (roofed pleasure boat) on a summer evening, gaze at Mt. Kinka, and sail upstream, feeling the river breeze. Enjoying local sake and a gourmet bento on the boat is the ultimate luxury. - Ayu Sweet-Making Experience
Let's make Gifu's classic Ayu sweets together with the young owner of a long-established Japanese confectionery shop. From hand-cooking the dough to wrapping the gyuhi (sweet rice cake), the process is surprisingly challenging, but the Ayu sweets you make yourself are especially delicious. You can customize your Ayu sweets by adding your favorite face or letters with a branding iron and take them home as a special souvenir.
