Hokkaido Shrine is dedicated to some of the most important figures in the region's history, locals like to visit it for good luck, and it serves as the focal point of the Sapporo Festival, held every year from June 14 to 16.
The shrine also provides an oasis of greenery within an urban setting—it's the best spot in Sapporo for the traditional Japanese pastime of flower viewing, especially in May, when both the cherry blossoms and plum blossoms are in bloom.
You can relax and enjoy classic Japanese refreshments like mochi rice cakes (100 yen) and tea, and then draw a traditional slip of paper that will tell you your fortune (100 yen, multiple languages available).
