Tokyo hosted the 75th International Institute of Welding (IIW) Annual Assembly and International Conference in July, welcoming participants from all over the world, both in-person and online. The conference attracted 843 registrations, including 507 people from various countries outside Japan. A total of 269 people from overseas attended onsite.

Conference Summary

Held at Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba in a hybrid format, the 75th IIW conference’s theme was “Innovative Welding and Joining Technologies to Achieve Carbon Neutrality and Promote Sustainable Development.” A collaborative event, the 2022 Japan International Welding Show, was held at the nearby Tokyo Big Sight between July 13 and July 16.

A highlight of the conference was the Japanese Evening, comprised of a standing buffet with entertainment for more than 500 participants that was designed to showcase Japanese summer vibes and support networking among participants. All the participants were impressed with the performance of Awa Odori, a traditional dance presented at one of Japan’s most prominent annual summer festivals. To bring the festival atmosphere into the conference venue, the organizers had decorated the facility with traditional summer festival game and food stalls, while yukata (summer kimono) was distributed to participants wishing to enjoy the traditional clothing. Clad in yukata, overseas guests joined the Awa Odori dance and enjoyed the night taking many pictures.

Conference attendees and organizers expressed high satisfaction with both the venue and Japan as host, commenting that while they had had high hopes of Tokyo as a venue, the event far exceeded their initial expectations.
