Veterinary Sciences

Sapporo is the hometown of Japan’s dairy and farming industry and is the capital of the veterinary sciences. For example, the region has over 60% of dairy cattle raised in Japan and the largest number of cattle veterinarians in the country. The city has been selected as a host of a number of prestigious conferences such as the International Wildlife Management Congress and World Buiatrics Congress, both held in Asia and Japan for the first time.

Environment

The G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit 2008 that paid intensive focus on environmental issues, left behind a strong legacy in Sapporo, which made the Eco Capital Sapporo declaration the same year. In 2007, prior to the Summit, Hokkaido University held its first Hokkaido University Sustainability Weeks event, which has grown into major international event since then. Environment continues to be the key topic in the city, which is a member of Global Destination Sustainability Index and one of the few cities in Japan that contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of its environment plan.
