“Calm and serene. The sound of a cicada. Penetrates the rock.”
This famous poem appears in “The Narrow Road to the Interior,” the travelogue of haiku master Matsuo Basho. The setting for this haiku is Yamadera (Hoshuyama-risshaku-ji Temple), one of the many places to enjoy each of the four seasons in nature-rich Yamagata. In addition, the Murayama area in the central part of the city is home to delicious cuisine including cherries, potato stews, rice (Tsuyahime and Yukiwakamaru varieties), ita-soba and Japanese sake; hot springs districts including Zao, Ginzan, Tendo and Kaminoyama; and traditional handicrafts such as safflower dyed fabrics, Tendo shogi pieces and Yamagata cast metal.
