2026.06.10 Kyoto Selected to Host the 44th Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress (APAO2029)!

We are pleased to announce that Kyoto, Japan, has been officially selected as the host city for the 44th Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress (APAO2029), the largest ophthalmology meeting in the Asia-Pacific region. The event brings together participants from more than 80 countries each year. This edition marks the event’s return to Japan for the first time in 15 years since the Tokyo edition in 2014.

The decision was finalized following a successful bid led by Professor Tetsuro Oshika, Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Tsukuba’s Institute of Medicine, who has demonstrated strong leadership as APAO President since 2025. Additional momentum was provided by a compelling presentation delivered by Professor Koji Nishiguchi, Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine, during the APAO Hong Kong Congress held in February at which he highlighted Kyoto’s strengths as a host city.

JNTO supported the bidding process by issuing invitation letters and providing consulting to enhance the effectiveness of the presentation, contributing to the successful outcome.

APAO2029, co-hosted with the Japanese Ophthalmological Society, will be held from March 28 to April 1, 2029, welcoming approximately 14,000 participants—including around 4,000 from overseas—at venues across Kyoto City.
