Prof. Zhidong Wang, of the Department of Advanced Robotics, Chiba Institute of Technology, and his bidding team made a successful presentation to host ICRA2024 in Yokohama, Japan, over that of Seoul, Korea.
The presentations to decide the host city for the 41st International Conference on Robotics and Automation were originally to be conducted during ICRA2020 in Paris, France in May 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, presentations were conducted online in September of the same year for/during the Administrative Committee of the IEEE Robotics & Automation Society (RAS), the host international organization.
Japan’s bid was highly rated in terms of the advanced level of research in the field of Robotics. The passion of the bid committee members and the conference vision of “Connect+” were also much appreciated and taken into consideration for the bid. Furthermore, Yokohama, the proposed city is recognized as a safe, convenient destination. Local and national governmental support also contributed to the success of the bid.
This conference of ”ICRA" has been held annually by the IEEE Robotics & Automation Society (RAS) and is the world’s most comprehensive large-scale international congress in the field. The very first conference was held in Atlanta, the USA in 1984. It has been held twice in Japan with 12th ICRA 1995 in Kobe and 26th ICRA 2009 in Kobe. Thus, it will be some 15 years for Japan to welcome prospective attendees throughout the world for the 41st ICRA 2024.
Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), in collaboration with Yokohama Convention & Visitors Bureau, played an important part in this successful bid. JNTO assisted Professor Zhidong Wang of Chiba Institute of Technology—who also serves as one of our JNTO MICE Ambassadors—during the two years of the bidding process. Japan had, in fact, attempted to invite ICRA2021 but we lost the bid to Xi’an, China.
Having experienced the COVID-19 pandemic, we all know how valuable it will be to finally meet in person and exchange ideas and knowledge at international congresses. We will be preparing for ICRA2024 to ensure the safety and security of all those traveling to Yokohama. We look forward to welcoming you to Japan, in May 2024!
We are looking forward to seeing you in Yokohama!
