Around the 11th century, the aristocracy is said to have enjoyed drinking and admiring the passing view while floating on a boat down the river. In the mid-17th century, samurai and merchants in the city of Edo (the old name for Tokyo) adopted this enjoyable passtime. Today, you can still enjoy a traditional yakatabune (banquet boat) cruise down the same river, with views of modern Tokyo.
