JNTO invited international convention organizers to Japan in order to introduce a variety of potential destinations for future conventions. The one-week event, "Meet Japan 2013", was held from Friday, March 1 through Thursday, March 7, 2013.
After arrival in Japan, the participants stayed overnight in Tokyo, and then departed for a four-day exciting study tour to visit cities throughout Japan that are great for holding international conventions. The tour included five courses: (1) Kobe & Hamamatsu, (2) Takamatsu & Matsue, (3) Okinawa & Kanazawa, (4) Sapporo & Matsumoto, and (5) Yokohama & Chiba. During the study tours, participants experienced custom-made itineraries in visiting historical sites, and savored the local cuisine and enjoyed Japanese traditional culture such as Zen meditation and tea ceremony as well as to visit convention centers and accommodations.
After the study tour, the participants returned to Tokyo to attend business sessions held the following day. The session lasted all day, and gave participants an opportunity to meet with representatives from ten of the cities that they visited, for further discussion of holding conferences.
The farewell party on the final day was held at the recently renovated Tokyo Station Hotel (reopened in October 2012) in a building featuring the old bricks originally used for the construction in 1914. At the party, the participants enjoyed Japan’s traditional Daikagura performance, with lion dances and juggling traditions handed down over the course of four centuries.
JNTO carries out this programme every year, and nearly 60% of the participants end up scheduling a convention in Japan afterwards. Ms. Katia Johansen:
This has been an excellent opportunity to learn why Japan is an excellent choice for a conference. JNTO’s efficient and thoughtful planning made it possible to see far more of Japan than I thought we could. I am good at what I do, so I can recognize it in others, and I appreciate your efforts. What’s more, I see that your standards of excellence are matched by your partner organizations in cities, convention bureaus and prefectures.
Mr. Lee Yong Tsui:
Only positive comments—everything was well done, and things run right on schedule. I am very grateful for the hospitality and courtesy extended to us the attendees. The attention of the staff wherever we went and their responsiveness to our questions and needs were excellent. We can't ask for more. We got to see a lot more of the places than we could do on our own, and appreciate more deeply the cultures and traditions of the places.
